Becky OH!
www.beckyoh.com

Becky O'Neil
was trained as a sculptor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and after a few jaunts around the globe, settled in Manchester, N.H. Now she spends her time creating stylish handbags out of beautiful fabrics. O'Neil started Becky OH! in 2004 as a way to satisfy her own craving for unique handbags. Ideas for the bags are inspired by the fabrics and are then designed for function. I like certain curvy shapes and I let the materials guide me: silks, wools, cottons. My bags appeal to the hand as well as the eye, O'Neil explains. She continues to amass a collection of interesting fabrics wherever she travels and always strives for eclectic combinations of pattern and texture. The result: each bag is one-of-a-kind.

Much attention is paid to precision and detail and every bag is sewn on an industrial machine with durable nylon thread. With Bella Bags you can rest assured that you are carrying a bag that is not only stylish, but also extremely durable and functional.

Big Skinny
www.bigskinny.net

Designed for people that Hate Thick Wallets. By December 2007, the Big Skinny will introduce 9 new super thin wallet designs. Designer Kiril Stefan Alexandrov started the Big Skinny after years of frustration of using bulky traditional wallets. It took almost two years of testing dozens of designs and over 75 natural and man-made materials searching for the right balance of good looks, functionality, and durability. Using an advanced version of the stylish nylon micro-fiber material that made Prada famous along with the special design resulted in a slim wallet so unique that I just had to name it. Imagine a well-organized slim wallet that you barely notice yet is good-looking and can fit 20+ credit cards plus bills. The Big Skinny is the thin wallet that is better for your back and it will make you look and feel thin.

Saya Studio Handbags
www.sayastudio.com

Saya Cullinan of Saya Studio handbags has lived in the South End for 13 years and continues to find much inspiration right here in the neighborhood. Her intention is to create unique, colorful and functional bags that are as one-of-a-kind as the women who use them!

Erin Moran Pottery

New Hampshire based potter Erin Moran specializes in hand built functional table ware, sculpture, and jewelry. Her signature cups and bowls are created with a pinched technique that leaves the surface with a lumpy texture which is fabulous to hold. The bright color combinations compliment these original designs. Being three dimensional, Erin’s figurative sculpture pieces are made to force the viewer to examine the work from every angle. As with the rest of her collection these works are somewhat functional because she believes in being able to use her creations. Her Jewelry is done on a much smaller scale than her other work so that the impact of her fingers and tools is very minimal. Inspired by surrealism and graphic patterns she utilizes her painting skills to express her vision through low-fire glazes. Because Erin is constantly exploring new color combinations and imagery and each piece is draw individually, no piece is the same. Her objective? To add a little cheer into everyone’s life.

Gabrielle Shaffner

I have lived and worked in Fort Point since 1988.

Karissa Chase
www.lillygiggleblissblog.typepad.com

Bright, fun and functional is the best way to describe the work of Karissa Chase. Australian born and bred, Karissa started potting in High School, right into Art College and has never looked back. Beginning with a whimsical addiction to painting cat food dishes, inspired by her own Tilly and Max, she was soon supplying pet stores all over the Great Southern Land. After finding herself in America (the things we do for love), and without a potters wheel or studio, she eventually got hooked on small pinch pots with motivating muses. Four years later she's back on track pinching, potting and painting a collection of bright and cheerful lovelies, whiskers and all.

PogiBabies
www.store.pogibabies.com

I began making baby items when I was pregnant with my daughter. I had been in the habit of making her Holiday dresses and things...but my little venture really began one day when I happened to be looking for a shopping cart cover. I wanted one that covered the entire cart area. I found only one brand available in my local stores...and it was only offered in a blue/red color combination. I decided to make one...a pink one! The next thing you know...I was making them for friends as baby gifts and eventually selling at local open market events.

Bren Bataclan
www.bataclan.com

In the summer of 2003 I began my installation entitled, "The Smile Project Boston". The project involves me leaving my cartoon inspired acrylic paintings for people to take for "free" all over Boston (park benches, train stations, hospitals etc.) Attached to each painting is a note saying, "This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people more often". My goals are to:

1. Bring art to people who typically do not visit art galleries and museums.
2. Give paintings to folks who may not be able to afford original art.
3. See smiles around the globe.

In a nutshell, I've always been a big fan of graffiti, but I never had the guts to spray paint, I use different cities across the country and around the world as my temporary exhibit spaces.

Bumble Belly Designs
www.bumblebellydesigns.etsy.com

I love to hunt; whether to scour the beach for sea treasures - shells, stones, driftwood, sea glass - or to hunt in antiques shops and flea markets for vintage stuff. Color and texture draw me in and it is with these passions that I create my wax works.

David Stern
www.davidsternphotography.com

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than ‘thinking photographically’- I’m most in touch with my soul while taking pictures. Nature and landscape scenes are primarily what I photograph, although I seek a strong emotional response to an image and the motif is really secondary to me. The relationship of light, color and composition fascinates me, however, I find I’m currently emphasizing color more than any other element in my work. I’ll frequently experiment with my photographic tools to push myself to create images that I feel ‘drip’ with a rich interplay of colors. While making an image, I’ve learned to increasingly trust that small voice inside of me when it starts to shout, “you’ve got it”!

Greg Stones
www.gregstones.com

Greg Stones
is a Rhode Island-based artist who specializes in intricate and humorous miniature watercolors. For the artist, it all comes down to penguins, zombies, and nudity. And perhaps aliens. He published his first illustrated humor book, Goodbye, Penguins, last year, and is currently preparing his second and third books for publication. To sum it all up, his paintings completely rock. (The artist paid me extra to write that.)

James Polisky

www.jamespolisky.com

Briefly explained, my current silkscreen work is a blend of drawing, color separation and hand printed screening, which has an oddly embraced inconsistency from print to print. The registration, multiple color layers, and ink coverage all have a place in every color of every print made.

Be it imagined or observed, or perhaps a bleeding of the borders between a simple cartoon and a reason to think. Whether offering views of monotonic bliss, a desperately uncertain future, laughter and a sliver of hope, or a lightning crack of violence, they all aim towards an appreciation of the greatness and power that every day can offer.

LuckyBird Studio
www.luckybirdstudio.com

Lucky Bird Studio was created by Kim T. Clark, a former graphic designer who isn't afraid of color, doesn't have the patience to knit, and is much better off with a creative outlet to keep the howling wolves at bay. All of her products are handmade with tender loving care and a neurotic attention to detail and quality. None of the components used in her work has any intrinsic value. Worth comes from how pieces are combined, reconfigured and reborn. Reclaimed base-metal, paper, resin, plastic, wood, glass, hardware and adopted bits and pieces. There is some sterling silver involved and the occasional Austrian crystal, but Kim likes using stuff that's been hanging around awhile looking for a good home and some attention.

Happy Art Studio
www.happyartstudio.com

I have been creating ever since I remember myself; I studied in art collage for 3 years in Israel. Also, I studied silversmith for another year. My art was featured in numerous magazines and books. My style has been shaped from years of travels all around the world, from the simple elements of nature, and by my Israeli heritage.

I like to work in small scale, and that brings me to crafting jewelry. I like to think of myself as a mixed media artist, since the materials I use, at any piece of artwork, would always be unexpected. Regardless to the technique I am currently using, color and whimsy are strong elements of my artwork.

Harmony Jusseaume
www.harmonyjusseaume.com

Before learning to work with metal I trained and worked as a glassblower. I found myself drawn to the tiny glowing pieces that would fall to the studio floor. I collected these in what grew to be buckets full of beautiful sharp objects waiting for their destiny - trash or treasure. Seeing my vision for these tiny treasures, my husband gave me a metals class as a gift and my first set of tools. Since then I have left my tiny little treasured pieces of glass in the bucket and blow glass specifically for my jewelry designs. This fusion of skill and material allow me to translate the intricacies of the glass and metals into an elegant, wearable line of jewelry.

Melle Finelli
www.mellefinellijewelry.com

I've been lucky to discover the art of metalsmithing. The question for me is: what do these shapes that come from inside me mean? I'm sure I do not have a concrete answer. I do know that the process of working with metal absolutely excites me. With each new tool I acquire, a new method of manipulating metal is born. The shapes I choose change in how they relate to one another within this process. This art form will be forever evolving for me. What more could I ask?

Rossler Glass
www.rosslerglass.com

My work begins with a desire to explore the medium of glass, and a passionate need to express an idea, thought or feeling. I am inspired by the natural image, mystique of the feminine, and sensations of color. I have been working primarily with glass since 1978, and have focused on body adornment for the last 13 years. This work involves hot and cold working processes in glass and fabrication of metals. As an artist I find glass offers a myriad of interesting elements to take from, such as light, color and form. I enjoy its fluidity and gem-like qualities, the possibilities for glass seem endless and exciting.

Stone That Flows
www.stonethatflows.com
www.xoxoxo.etsy.com

Melanie is currently working from her private studio in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The city of New Bedford has a rich history in both the whaling and textile industries. Monstrous mills line the river, and fishing boats are constantly entering and departing from the harbor. Yet in contrast to this immense industrial landscape, there are many areas along coast that still feel untouched, and are also truly magnificent. Inspiration for the most recent collection has been drawn from both the natural characteristics and the manufactured details of the environment that encompass Melanie. She is attempting to create a balance between the elements of glass and metal. Focusing on the organic, repetitive patterns created in glass, in addition to the somewhat rigid structures produced out of brass and silver. Additive and subtractive processes were implemented, depending on the desired aesthetic of each object, making each piece of jewelry truly unique.

Blue Donkey Clothing
www.bluedonkeyclothing.com

I use everyday materials to transform them into complex cloth, through various techniques, including beading, couching, embroidery, pin tucking, fraying, and appliqué. I might combine commercially printed cottons with hand-dyed wool or recycled leftovers from other projects with yarn, floss, string, buttons and whatever might be at hand. I am interested in the shifting of figure and ground, just like in painting. The means of construction is often also the surface design I draft the patterns from ideas in my sketchbook, grading them to size and cutting and stitching  nothing into something cozy, elegant imaginative and often beautiful.

Sweet Felt Goods

Sweet Felt Goods-good for the environment- made from recycled 100% wool sweaters. Felting is a process by which wool is "shrunk" at a very high water temperature creating a very dense, very soft fiber. Some of my Sweet Felt Goods are bordered in blanket-stitch with homegrown Rhode Island yarn, and some are uniquely bordered in silk (also totally washable) All Sweet Felt Goods are machine washable, cool water, dry flat and tumble dry for a few minutes on warm in your dryer to plump up the super soft wool fibers.

Elizabeth Brennick is a seamstress, wife, mother, and cat lover. She's been sewing for five years but has been an artist all of her life. An omen from a past loved one was cast on her when she was given her sewing machine and supplies about seven years ago. She loves the ability to create things that pop up in her brain late at night when the world is sleeping. She uses bright cheerful colors and large prints especially flowers for her fabrics. Another material she's very giddy over is felt . The various colors and texture gives her the ability to sew the cutest creations. She loves what she does. She gets to wake up everyday to the sun shining, her sewing machines waiting, and her kids running down the stairs to see who gets to the bottom first.

The Hole Thing

Louise Cady-Fernandes creates a line of whimsical sweaters, house wares and accessories made from recycled felted wool. Her sweaters and scarves have die- cut circles in them, which create windows for whatever shirt or blouse is worn underneath. Louise previously worked in knitwear design for Susan Bristol Inc for sixteen years. THE HOLE THING has been featured in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine in The Find.
